A teacher at a Seattle public schools is now under investigation after he allegedly confronted a 10th-grade student over the latter’s use of the word “straight” to describe one’s sexuality.
Seattle Public Schools (SPS) is now investigating self-described “communist educator” Ian Golash, who found the description offensive. Golash teaches 10th-grade ethnic studies world history at the Chief Sealth International High School (CSIHS).
The teacher reportedly gave his students in the class a “Social Identity Wheel” to fill out as homework. Students were asked to name and explain their various “identities,” including race; ethnicity; gender; socioeconomic status; physical and emotional disabilities; and sexual orientation. One 15-year-old male student labeled himself as “straight.”
The label did not sit well with Golash, who described it as “derogatory” even though the word has been used since the mid-20th century to characterize heterosexuality. The teacher confronted the “straight” student, who then told his mother of the incident. “It is completely inappropriate to dictate what terms a student can and cannot use to identify themselves with,” the student’s mother said in a Sept. 24 email to SPS.
The mother also accused Golash of bullying her son in class. She continued: “You missed an opportunity here to teach your student about current events and instead shamed him for being a male. To assume that he’s being raised in a patriarchal household is a very mistaken one.”
Golash admitted to his disdain for the term “straight,” but denied he was telling students how to identify. “My response about patriarchy was not directed at one student. It was connected to discussions of systems of power that we had been having in the previous few days and the behavior of several boys in the class,” he insisted. Aside from being a teacher, Golash also chairs the social studies department at CSIHS – giving him a much bigger scope and responsibility. But parents are questioning why he is still in the school, despite a long history of indoctrinating students with radical ideologies.
Back in December, Golash reportedly failed a student in a quiz after the latter upheld two biological truths. According to the Post Millennial, the student answered “true” on two questions about whether only women can get pregnant and whether only men have penises.
This clear bias was the least of Golash’s offenses; the educator reportedly identified himself with Antifa and even defended Hamas’ atrocities. “Golash … used a symbol of [the] violent extremist movement Antifa as his avatar, [and] tries to indoctrinate and radicalize his students,” independent journalist Andy Ngo wrote on X.
In 2020, Golash led student protesters into the King County Jail and attempted to block news cameras. He was also listed as a plaintiff in a lawsuit against the city of Seattle for the wrongful death of Summer Taylor and failure to protect Black Lives Matter and Antifa rioters, who marched onto a freeway to protest during the summer of 2020. One protestor was killed and another was injured when a driver ignored the closures and sped onto the closed freeway.
